2011 – Lake Lanier Event
March 31-April 2
The 2011 Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix begins on one of the nation’s most well-known lakes for spotted bass fishing, Lake Lanier in northeast Georgia.
Created by the damming of the Chattahoochee River, scenic Lake Lanier will provide anglers with ample room to move about. Lanier has been the site of numerous professional tournaments over the years but this is the first time the PAA Tournament Series has staged an event there.
Lake Lanier is home to a legendary population of spotted bass that will give anglers a test of their skills. Look for topwaters, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, jigs, shakey rigs and the drop shot to all get a workout, with the upper stretches of the Chattahoochee River offering the possibility for some action with largemouth for shallow-water anglers.
The field will most likely find pre-spawn and spawning spotted bass as well, increasing the chances for big catches of “magnum” spots.
“Lake Lanier is a beautiful lake with a ton of fish in it,” said BassCat pro John Crews of Virginia. “It has a ton of fingers and coves so it fishes big. With big spots and nice largemouth, it will be a fun tournament for the PAA field to begin the 2011 season.”
Planning for Buford Dam, which created Lake Lanier, was begun in 1949 with financial appropriations from the federal government as part of a massive national public works project. The intake gates were closed on Feb. 1, 1956, which began the process of filling what would become a 38,000-acre lake with close to 700 miles of shoreline.
